| Jewish history in Hohenems began in 1617 with the settlement of the first Jews with the local Earl of the Realm's family and ended in 1942 with the deportation of the last Jews from Hohenems to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Today, there are still many traces of Jewish history visible in the town: the cemetery in the south which is still used, the former synagogue, the former Jewish school, the former care centre for the elderly and poor of the Jewish community as well as the numerous homes of inhabitants and factory owner's villas. In 1905, the Rabbi Aron Tänzer already laid the basis for an exploration of this anti-Semitism with his extensive 'Geschichte der Juden in Hohenems' (History of the Jews in Hohenems). In the meantime, numerous publications and a video film have appeared about Jewish history in Hohenems, anti-Semitism and national socialism in Vorarlberg or on the question of the handling of the former Jewish quarter in Hohenems, all of which are now available in the museum.(see shop) |
